The History and Development of Organized Crime in the Former SFR Yugoslavia in the Shadow of its Secret Services
This thesis examines the interrelationships between intelligence services and organized crime in socialist Yugoslavia and its successor states. It aims to show that the interaction of intelligence and criminal structures is of general relevance for the understanding of contemporary history and the present in the post-Yugoslavian space. The thesis is interdisciplinary between contemporary history and political science; it generates new knowledge about the background of the Yugoslav state collapse, the stagnating EU enlargement process and the current geopolitical power shifts in Southeastern Europe. The sources include numerous previously unpublished primary sources such as unpublished case files of the secret services of the SFRY and its successor organizations, court rulings and court assessments, as well as expert interviews with key contemporary witnesses.
